Thermal printers can produce high-quality images either in plain black or in black and a second color, most often red. The process uses thermal print heads to heat specially coated paper, which turns the coating black when it reaches the proper temperature. Dual-color output is achieved by heating the coating to two different temperatures.

Use Thermal Printers for Specialized Industrial and Commercial Applications

"...At All ID we carry an excellent selection of Zebra and other specialty printers which can create anything from identification cards and badges to barcodes, embossed documents and product labels." Using a related process, thermal transfer systems use an internal ribbon that responds to heat, rather than coated paper that changes color when it gets hot. The transfer process is favored for applications involving, for example, barcode labels and clothing labels. It produces longer-lasting results that resist the wear and tear these types of products encounter during their shelf lives.
